Dachshund History

Dachshunds are of German origin. These odd dogs are often nicknamed "sausage" or "wiener" dogs, or doxies for short.
Their name actually translates into "badger dog" because they were bred for hunting badgers. Later the miniature dachshund was bred for
hunting rabbits. They have small legs and loose skin to help them burrow into badger holes and fight them without getting hurt. Their
ears flap down so that, while they are excavating, dirt and debris are kept out of their inner ear. Kaiser Wilhelm II owned many dachshunds
himself. At the height of World War I the popularity of the Dachshund in America had fallen greatly because of the Kaiser. Fearing what would happen to
them, the AKC tried to rename them their literal English translation "badger dog" as well as "liberty hounds" to protect them
from anti-german violence that may have been occuring at the time.
